The Best Presents!

I recently had an interesting experience in the food store. As the packing lady finished storing the groceries in my three bags, she handed them to me. I asked if she was going to take them to the car, but she murmured under her breath and looked ahead to the next customer. I was taken aback.

I really could have used the help as one bag was heavy with meat for my mother. I could be wrong, but perhaps with only three bags, she figured she would not have gotten a big enough tip. I don’t know.

I am a stickler for good customer service and I expect it even from the packing lady at the store. She shrugged me off. Further, I noticed she didn’t budge from the packing area; hence, preventing the next in line a chance to pack and gain a tip. As I exited the store with my three bags, I stopped to the first packer waiting on the line and gave her the tip I had for my packer.

Do you see how easy it is to despise something that was meant to be a blessing? Sometimes that increase is too small or perhaps that position too lowly. Maybe the present you received was seemingly too cheap. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In all things give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus...”

After that experience, I thought of how a packer at another store reacted totally differently a few months earlier. As this student from A. F. Adderley was packing my bag, I was honest and told him I had no cash on me, so I would take my bags to the vehicle. This time, it was no three bags; it was a full trolley.

He humbly said it was okay and he would still take my groceries to the vehicle. I was impressed with this young man. He knew upfront he wasn’t getting a dime AND after not getting a dime, he would have to go to the back of the packers’ line.

I took the opportunity to express my gratitude and briefly encouraged him in the Lord. I promised him I would be back to give him a tip at some point.

Within two or three weeks, I returned to the store solely for that purpose. I met him on the line chatting with his peers. I asked if he remembered me. He said yes, with big wide, almost-smiling eyes. I escorted him off the line and pulled out a card from my bag which had a handwritten note of encouragement. Inside, I had slipped a handsome sum of money – way more than I believe the average packer receives for a tip.

The young man received a gift for doing for me when he knew he would get nothing in return, whereas the lady seemed to reject assisting possibly because the reward might not have been big enough.

Some of the best presents come in unassuming packages.

I understand packers make no salary, but attitude makes a huge difference. Let us be careful how we handle situations. Remember: The best presents aren’t always in the glittering or biggest packages!

Stop Complaining!

This is going to be short. I’ve decided to get straight to the point.

STOP COMPLAINING! Simple.

The Israelites did not remain in the wilderness for 40 years simply because of a lack of faith. They also stayed there because of complaining.

Angels’ food was not good enough. I suppose they wanted rosemary, thyme, garlic etc. Springs of water were not good enough either. I guess they wanted ginger tea, orange juice and the like. And they didn’t recognize that their clothes never got old nor did holes burn into their shoes.

What is God providing for you that you are complaining about?

I am convinced that the longer you complain, the longer you stay in the wilderness. I’m not saying you shouldn’t want better. But do yourself a favour and start being thankful for what you do have and the many blessings God has bestowed upon you.

Finish the Job!

Even I surprised myself two nights ago. I was scrubbing the tiles in the restroom when electricity plunged me into darkness.

This was no surprise as in the past few months, this has been happening several times a week, multiple times a day (I shall not speak of the woes of the local electricity company). Howevever, what was a surprise was my decision to keep cleaning. I got a lamp and continued to scrub the tiles, by way of a dim light.

Of course having better lighting conditions would have been favourable, but I figured with the surge in energy I was feeling, ‘Hey, why not finish the job?!’

I’m here today to tell you finish the job! I remember when I got pregnant in college, I took one semester off, had my baby and six weeks after the birth, I was back in the classroom taking two summer courses. I didn’t even wait for the fall semester. That was too far. I had a degree to finish and a career to start. Not finising was NOT a consideration! That was 26 years ago. A year-and-a-half later, I completed my first degree.

Circumstances might have gotten in your way. Things are looking dark. You need money to finish college, you need money to finish that house, you need help finishing that project, you might not want to have that baby. You are thinking of opting out of your marriage. You have undoubtedly experienced some road blocks, there are some ditches you have had to climb out…you had to ride some treacherous seas on a rickety boat that would seemingly capsize on the way to the other side. But guess what? Press on…push through…don’t give up. Finish…and finish strong!

Remember, God has His eyes upon you. He cares about every iota of your life. He wants you to trust and obey Him. He wants you to come to Him and and if you already know Him, He wants to strengthen that relationship with you. “…greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4 v 4

With God, you can finish strong naturally AND spitlritually – despite the dark times.

The Faith of Chesea Taylor’s Mom

This is Chelsea Taylor. In this photo taken on Sunday past – just six days ago – she was lifting her hand and voice in praise and worship to the Lord, Almighty. The Hillsong worship leader fell ill shortly after exiting the stage of the church, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, and was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent a reported nine hours of brain surgery. She had an aneurysm.

Chelsea is still alive and we thank God! We pray that God would lift her off her sick bed and work a miracle. In fact, what is so amazing is Chelesa was out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) by Tuesday, when it was expected she would be in there for three weeks! And on Thursday, she was able to venture out of her room and down the hall – even eat breakfast! LOOKA OUR GOD!!!! Hallelujah!

But it’s Chelsea’s mother’s faith that resonated with me. Her mom said:

“She walked into church Sunday morning in her white sneakers! I am taking them into her room today as A declaration of Faith that she is going to walk out of this hospital 100 percent healed in Jesus’ mighty name.”

Chelsea in her white sneakers.

Chelsea’s mother is putting faith to action. Faith without works is DEAD (James 2 v 26)! She is believing for her daughter’s recovery. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5 v 7). It is my prayer that Chelsea would walk out of the hospital in these sneakers and eventually into that worship centre in them, to glorify God in the precious name of Jesus! May He raise her up that others would believe!

Take a listen to a sample of one of Hillsong’s beautiful worship songs, What a Beautiful Name. May Chelsea continue to call on that name!
